Step 1
Location: Full sun is best for most vegetables. Level ground is easier.
Drainage: If placed on compacted soil or paving, make drainage holes or raise the bed (use gravel base and/or drill sleepers for drainage).
Step 2 — Assemble base frame
Place two long sleepers on the ground parallel. Position the two short sleepers at the ends to form a rectangle.
Join corners using 150–200 mm galvanised coach screws through pre-drilled holes (use two screws per corner, staggered). If using corner posts, fix sleepers to posts with coach screws.
Step 3: Install the Weed Mat
- Cut the weed mat to fit the base of the planter.
- Lay it inside the planter to prevent weeds from growing through.
Step 4: Add Soil and Compost
- Mix soil and compost in a wheelbarrow or on a tarp.
- Fill the planter with the mixture, leaving a few inches from the top.
Step 5: Add Plants
- Dig holes or trenches as needed and plant your vegetables according to their spacing requirements.
Step 6: Apply Mulch
- Spread a layer of mulch over the soil to retain moisture and suppress weeds.
- Ensure the mulch does not touch the stems of the plants to prevent rot.
Step 10: Add Fertilizer
- Choose a suitable fertilizer for your vegetables.
- Follow the instructions on the package for application rates and methods.
- Water the plants thoroughly after fertilizing.
